Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the censorship procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise significant concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But a few do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted
However, broader discourse on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
