A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
